My mother called me to tell me the news. She did not need to, as I was following the results online. Irving did it! He won gold! At 9:45AM ET he was the gold medal winner in the Long Jump. And a tiny country of 3.3 million celebrates! I would love to be down there right now.
I watched in horror Saturday (not on TV, thanks NBC) as he barely qualified for the final in his last jump. Today, he did not need his last jump. This is the third overall medal for Panama in Olympic history, joining the two bronze medals won by Lloyd LaBeach in 1948 in the 100m and 200m in Track and Field.
As for me, I did a recovery swim today. I did 150 lengths at a steady (read slow) pace. I am limping a little from the bike ride, but I should be OK by tomorrow. Because this is my rest day, there will be no second workout after work today.
Matt asked me this morning if I thought the ride was more difficult than a Half-Iroman. I had to think about it for a moment. I think that the half was tougher, but I was motivated to finish at all costs. I did not have that kind of motivation yesterday, and thus, it became very difficult to finish.
And looking at my calendar, I see another century ride this weekend. Oh well...
